La Mafia Ships Platinum with “Euforia”

New Album by Super-group Goes Platinum Prior to Release

Scheduled for official release on September 1st, the newest La Mafia studio effort has been certified platinum by Sony Discos executives. While in Miami for a “Midem Latin America & Caribbean 1998” showcase, members of La Mafia were presented with Platinum Record plaques by Sony Discos U.S. President Oscar Llord. Whosesale orders to retail outlets totaled more than 100,000 units, thus qualifying ‘Euforia’ for platinum status.

Held at the world famous South Beach Brasserie, the special Platinum presentation ceremony was attended by Jorge Pino, V.P./G.M. of Sony Latin, Rafael Cuevas, V.P./G.M. Sony Tropical and Ray Martinez, Vice President and General Manager for Sony Tejano. The presence of representatives from the various Sony divisions underscored the broad popularity of the two-time Grammy Award winning La Mafia.

According to Jorge Pino, chief executive in charge of Sony’s Latin pop division, ‘Euforia’ will get a major label push in Puerto Rico and the rest of Latin America. The album, says Oscar Llord, will play well in both Mexican Regional and internatioal pop formats.

Produced by Mando Lichtenberger Jr., the album was introduced with “Pido,” a lush bolero written by Jorge Luís Piloto, a long-time La Mafia collaborator. The single has drawn favorable comparisons to classic Mafia hits such as “Me Estoy Enamorando,” “Vida” and “Para Siempre Contigo.”

Ray Martinez, a Sony executive based in San Antonio, is committed to the project and has made the album a marketing and promotional priority. “We’re very impressed with this record,” said Martinez. “With Euforia, La Mafia continues to set new stylistic and innovative standards. We’re plan to give it all we’ve got.”

In support of the album, La Mafia will swing through La Vegas for a show at the Flamingo Hilton while kicking off a major three-month tour through Mexico.
